Crossroads of the Danforth

Danforth Avenue is one of the Toronto's main east-west roads. Together with Bloor Street, it cuts across the majority of the city, bridging together the many very different neighbourhoods along the way. Crossroads of the Danforth represents one of these areas, an older suburban commercial strip in the eastern end of the city.

The Crossroads of the Danforth Business Improvement Area comprises the portion of Danforth Avenue roughly from Victoria Park Avenue in the west to Scotia Avenue in the east. You can learn more about this BIA at www.codbia.ca.

Location

It is situated on the western edge of the old city of Scarborough, now part of the amalgamated City of Toronto. Beyond here Danforth Avenue continues on for a short distance before merging with Kingston Road while overlooking Lake Ontario.

The Crossroads of the Danforth is accessible to the rest of the city by TTC subway, with the Victoria Park Station on the east-west Bloor-Danforth Subway Line located just north of Danforth Avenue on Victoria Park Avenue.

Several city buses also run along Danforth Avenue here, as well as the 24 Victoria Park Bus which runs north to Highway 401. That highway is about 10 kilometres north of here, while the Don Valley Parkway is approximately five kilometres to the northwest.

Businesses

The neighbourhood generally consists of apartment buildings and low-density commercial built up along Danforth Avenue, with low-density residential beyond.

The automotive industry is particularly prominent here, with a large number of automotive repair shops, mechanics, automotive parts shops and service centres, as well as nearly a dozen used and specialty automotive dealerships. While there are a few chain stores found here (Part Source, Enterprise Rent-A-Car), the majority are independent small businesses.

Beyond the large automotive sector, there are also a wide range of retail and service businesses. There are stores selling furniture (Frontier Sales Furniture), home improvement (Gable Roofing), exotic pets (Reptilez), mattresses (Beyond Futons), and entertainment (Awash Cyber & Movie Rentals).

Other businesses include doctors' offices, accountants, driving schools, dog groomers, beauty salons, dry cleaners, and even a paintball arena (Gladiator's Paintball).

Restaurants

The restaurants and eateries found in the Crossroads of the Danforth generally stick to the formula of simple and fast. Fast food chains like Kentucky Fried Chicken and Tim Horton's share the neighbourhood with small independent restaurants like Moonrise Caribean Restaurant, Regino's Pizza and J&D Hamburger Fish & Chips

Perhaps the best-known eatery here is Smokin' Hicks, a BBQ joint famous for its massive "Meal Deals" of brisket, pulled pork and ribs, all smoked over freshly-cut hickory.

Other local attractions include Oakridge Park, located near the intersection of Pharmacy Avenue and Danforth. It has a playground, sports fields and a spray pool for the kids, in addition to the recreational activities offered through the nearby Oakridge Community Recreation Centre

In the summer, the park has also hosted the Crossroads of the Danforth Festival in the Park, an event put on by the local BIA.
