At first glance Toronto’s port lands look like just another old industrial area, but if you search a little deeper; you will discover a whole world of activity and entertainment that is known as Polson Pier.
Formerly called, “The Docks“, Polson Pier features a long list of both indoor and outdoor events geared to engage crowds and bring people together.
Management describes it as a multi-purpose entertainment complex that is perfectly situated along the shore of the Toronto Harbour.
Polson Pier complex can be divided into 4 distinct Areas:
- Sound Academy
- Amusement Areas
Sound Academy is Polson Pier’s 7-thousand square foot concert and event hall. An advanced sound and lighting system is set to create a unique entertainment experience here.
Well known bands like the Blushing Brides perform here. Drake and Jamie Foxx have also graced the stage at the Sound Academy Concert Venue.
Polson Pier management believe in equal opportunity so they have set up an indie program that will allow you; the public, to hit the stage to show off your talents as well. In addition, loyal customers can take advantage of contests and special events that are held at the Sound Academy Nightclub.
The club continues to draw some of the top DJ’s in the world, and they host an annual event combining music and extreme sports that only grows more popular each year.
The Polson Pier entertainment complex includes several sections that can be considered amusement areas. Outside is an area known as the playground.
Situated along the waterfront, it includes all kinds of fun, physically activity; both individual and team based. A 750 metre go-kart track is a mainstay at Polson Pier, as is an 18 hole mini putt.
From summer to summer activities can change slightly, but beach volleyball, challenging obstacle courses, human foosball, gladiator jousting, and rock climbing have taken place several years in a row.
Pool and ping pong tables are set up outside for individuals or groups. They can be booked for exclusive gatherings and are relatively inexpensive.
A large sized swimming pool awaits those who want to cool off on those hot summer days in Toronto. Change rooms and showers are available a short distance away.
Some visitors like to hit the Polson Pier waterfront driving range first then take a dip in the pool. Others prefer to enjoy the fun in the sun and then go to the range at night, which by the way has full lighting and certified instructors.
Indoor amusement includes a Dome with artificial turf for soccer games, lacrosse, rugby and ultimate frisbee. This facility is available summer, winter, spring and fall, but can book up fast so it is always a good idea to call well ahead of time to reserve whatever date you have in mind.
The Solarium is an all glass room with a retractable roof and a stunning view of Lake Ontario. It is commonly used by corporations for special events. Private functions are also held here.
This facility can be used all year round. The Muskoka is another facility that can be used for event purposes. It provides visitors with a spectacular view of the city.
Lakeview Drive in Theatre
The Lakeview is the only drive-in theatre still operating in downtown Toronto. Today there are less than 100 left in all of Canada.
During late spring and throughout the summer months, Lakeview Drive in offers a special movie experience for the whole family. Two large outdoor screens offer up the most current, top-rated movies.
There is no reason to go hungry at Polson Pier. Between the barbecues on the beach, barbecues on the outdoor patios and the menu at Toronto’s Cabana restaurant, there should be no problem addressing your appetite. Brunch, lunch, dinner or just snacks and drinks can be enjoyed 7 days a week.
A team of experienced special events co-ordinators are always ready to help you plan your next gathering at Polson Pier, whether it is a corporate event or a special, personal occasion.
Although there is information online about booking space, you are advised to call directly to speak to a staff member. There tends to be a high demand for event bookings so it is always good to pick a few different dates just in case your first choice is not available.
Polson specializes in corporate leadership events. Many companies hold leadership training events at Polson Pier year after year.
It is safe to say that Polson Pier entertainment venue is unique to the city of Toronto. If you are looking for a variety of day and night activity all in close proximity to each other, this section of Toronto’s port lands are worth checking out.
