Can you take a joke? If your answer is yes then you should check out Yuk Yuk’s in Toronto. The comedy club has caused people to fall down laughing for over 30 years.

Yuk Yuk’s helped put Canada and Toronto on the map as a serious contender in the funny business. Although the city of Toronto is the birthplace of this comedy institution, there are now over a dozen Yuk Yuk’s clubs across the nation.

Sandra Bernhard, Steven Wright, Danny Bonaduce, Jim Carrey and Dan Ackroyd are just a few of the famous names that have been at Toronto’s top comedy club over the years.

Yuk Yuk’s isn’t really a showcase for the well-known though. It is an opportunity for up and coming comedians to try out new material and start building a name for themselves.

History

Yuk Yuk’s was created by Toronto resident, Mark Breslin back in 1974. At the age of 24, Breslin thought a small comedy club would draw enough attention for budding comedians eager to entertain an audience. Little did he know at that time how big his concept would become.

The original Yuk Yuk’s was located in a small community centre on Church Street. The admission for a night filled with laughs and the unexpected, just 2 dollars.

Today a lot of the shows run between 20 and 30 dollars, and the club is located at 224 Richmond Street west; between Simcoe and Duncan. Making a reservation is recommended.

As the zany and sometimes outrageous acts grew in popularity more yuk yuk’s clubs were established; most of them in the province of Ontario.

Yuk Yuk’s soon became a household name. When you can’t get a seat at the Toronto comedy club, you can take a short drive to the outskirts of the city and find a Yuk Yuk’s in Ajax, Vaughan or Mississauga
