It is best described as Toronto’s most contemporary theatre. The Princess of Wales Theatre was built in 1993 by the well-known Mirvish family. The late Edward Mirvish and his son, David worked tirelessly to develop the concept for this spectacular venue.

The theatre was created with elegance in mind. Exceptional technical details help every production come alive. Theatre goers have said they get so drawn into the shows that they forget they are even sitting among an audience.

Several skilled artists and dedicated crafts people came together to build the Princess of Wales, a visual masterpiece. The building incorporates glass, metal, Venetian terrazzo flooring, and 20 thousand square feet of African mahogany.

It is truly a sight to see. Many architects and engineers study the building and so do students looking to educate themselves on the best in modern structural design.

Some of the best known productions staged here include: The Lion King, Oliver, The Sound of Music, Les Miserable, The Phantom of the Opera and the huge hit, Miss Saigon. For a line-up of current shows you can go to www.mirvish.com.

The Name

The Princess of Wales Theatre is named after the late, Princess Diana. When the Mirvish family decided to build the modern-day theatre they thought it would be fitting to give it a royal flavour.

The nearby Royal Alexander, also run by the Mirvish family, would be the sister-theatre to this new creation so they sought permission from Diana to name it after her.

Seating

The Princess of Wales has three distinct seating sections; Orchestra, Dress Circle and Balcony. The viewing floor is shaped like a horseshoe that includes a total of 2000 seats. It is designed for optimal comfort and viewing.

Assisted seating is available, but if you require help it is wise to give TicketKing a call to find out what spots are the best for you in all the different price ranges.

Keep in mind there is an elevator so access to the various sections is never a problem. As well, this is a wheelchair accessible theatre.

So many of the world’s top theatres have a common feature; their large size; however, even though some describe the Princess of Wales as grand looking, the seating area is considered small, creating an intimate feeling.

Theatre management says that visitors from around the Globe have commented on how well-connected they feel to the performers when they see a show here.
